# The Illegal Economy

> How crime works on Bad Times: the burner tablet, jobs, the market and where the money goes.

Crime on Bad Times is a supply chain, not a menu. Almost everything starts with the **burner tablet**.

## The burner tablet

Get a **Burner Tablet** item (or type `/illegalmenu`). It opens:

* **Jobs** — 18 illegal jobs: car theft, chop shop, bag snatching, counterfeit money, fraud, money laundering, gun smuggling, illegal deliveries, moonshine, container heists, plane drug runs, NPC boxing, and weed / coke / meth jobs. Each has a level requirement; you gain XP as you work.
* **Market** — buy the chemicals and gear you need to cook (see [Drugs](/guides/drugs)) and the tools each job needs (crowbar, lockpick, digiscanner, ATM hack device…). Drone-delivered, paid in cash or card.
* **Profile** — your illegal nickname, level and stats.

<Warning>
  Police and EMS can't open the tablet. If you're on duty, you're out.
</Warning>

## The Plug

Separate from the tablet. The Plug is a **paid connection** for people who aren't in a faction — a way to buy product, guns and ammo wholesale. See [The Plug](/guides/the-plug).

## Dirty money

Every illegal job pays in dirty money. Clean it through money orders or laundering jobs — see [Money](/guides/money).

## Getting caught

Most illegal activity has a chance of alerting the NYPD. Cooking with the wrong quantities sets your lab on fire. Overdosing kills. Read the [Rules](/rules) on illegal activities before you start.
